# How to Display the Correct "Recurring Subtotal" at Checkout (Workaround)

When combining a bundle deal with a subscription, Shopify's checkout can sometimes display a misleading **Recurring Subtotal**.

While the initial charge is always calculated accurately, the "Recurring Subtotal" line underneath may show the full original price before bundle discounts. This workaround helps you eliminate visual discrepancies and boost checkout conversions.

### 🔍 Understanding the Issue

This is a native Shopify display behavior: the "Recurring Subtotal" line does not automatically account for external app discounts on recurring subscription contracts.

#### 💡 Concrete Example:

* **Product Base Price:** $50 (1 Bottle)
* **Bundle Tiers:**
  * 1 Bottle: $50
  * 2 Bottles: $45/unit ($90 total | $100 compare-at)
  * 3 Bottles: $40/unit ($120 total | $150 compare-at)
* **Subscription Discount:** Additional 10% Off
* **Final Correct Total for 3-Bottle Bundle + Subscription:** $108.00 ($120 - 10%)
When the customer checks out for a 3-Bottle subscription, Shopify correctly charges **$108.00** for the initial order. However, right below it, checkout displays:
❌ **Recurring subtotal:** $135.00 every month *(calculating 3 × $50 base price = $150 minus 10% subscription discount, ignoring the bundle discount)*.

### 🧠 The Fix: Bake Discounts Into Shopify Variants

Instead of applying a dynamic app discount, you can create variants in Shopify that already have the discounted pricing built-in. You have **two approach options** depending on how you prefer to set up your variants and offers.

### ⚙️ Option 1: Per-Unit Discounted Variants (Standard Quantity Mapping)

###### Step 1: Create Per-Unit Variants in Shopify Admin

1. Go to **Shopify Admin > Products** and select your product.
2. Create variants corresponding to your bundle tiers (e.g., *1 Bottle*, *2 Bottles*, *3 Bottles*).
3. Set the **per-unit price** for each variant:
   * **1 Bottle Variant:** Price = $50 (Base price)
   * **2 Bottles Variant:** Price = $45 per unit | Compare-at price = $50
   * **3 Bottles Variant:** Price = $40 per unit | Compare-at price = $50

###### Step 2: Configure Quantities & Map Variants in Rapid Bundle

1. Open **Rapid Bundle**, navigate to your bundle settings, and set item quantities for each offer (*Offer 1 = 1 unit*, *Offer 2 = 2 units*, *Offer 3 = 3 units*).
2. Set "default price" for each offer.
3. Under advanced settings, use **Set default variants** to map each variant:
   * **Offer 1 (1 Bottle):** Link the *1 Bottle* variant.
   * **Offer 2 (2 Bottles):** Link the *2 Bottles* variant across both item selectors.
   * **Offer 3 (3 Bottles):** Link the *3 Bottles* variant across all 3 item selectors.
4. Turn off **"Let customers choose different variants"** to prevent conflicts.
5. Save and publish.

### ⚙️ Option 2: Total Package Price Variants (Quantity Set to 1)

###### Step 1: Create Total Package Price Variants in Shopify Admin
######
1. Go to **Shopify Admin > Products** and select your **product**.
2. Create variants representing the **total package price**:
   * **1 Bottle Variant:** Price = $50
   * **2 Bottles Bundle Variant:** Price = $90 ($45 × 2) | Compare-at price = $100 ($50 × 2)
   * **3 Bottles Bundle Variant:** Price = $120 ($40 × 3) | Compare-at price = $150 ($50 × 3)

###### Step 2: Set Quantity to 1 & Map Variants in Rapid Bundle

1. In **Rapid Bundle**, set the item quantity to **1** for **all offers** (*Offer 1 = 1 unit*, *Offer 2 = 1 unit*, *Offer 3 = 1 unit*).
2. Set "default price" for each offer.
3. Under advanced settings, use **Set default variants** to map the specific total price variant to its respective offer:
   * **Offer 1:** Link the *1 Bottle* variant.
   * **Offer 2:** Link the *2 Bottles* variant.
   * **Offer 3:** Link the *3 Bottles* variant.
4. Save and publish.

### 🎉 The Result at Checkout

When a customer subscribes to the 3-Bottle offer:
* Shopify reads the pre-discounted variant price ($120) minus the 10% subscription discount = **$108.00**.
* **Recurring Subtotal line displays:** $108.00 every month (100% accurate!).
* Zero visual discrepancy for the customer.

|| ⚠️ Note: These workarounds require managing multiple variants per product in Shopify Admin. If you prefer using a single variant without extra setup, rest assured that your customers will still be billed the correct final amount despite the visual checkout display.
